People are just insensitive and sometimes just dumb. My husband, who worked in his dad's candy store from the age of 7, worked three jobs to put himself thru City College and law school, was so happy when he finally made it. After a decade as a lawyer was proud to be able to buy his own tuxedo to attend a formal function. When he got to the door of the Plaza Hotel decked out in his new suit, the doorman said to him, "Hey--The band goes thru the service entrance!"
